Meet Early Careerists Michael & Ian

ACHE-RI's Early Careerist network provides young Rhode Island healthcare executives and students the opportunity for professional development through relevant information sessions, networking events, community service activities, and a formal mentorship program.

 

Early Careerists are introduced at ACHE-RI events and featured on the ACHE-RI website. Michael W. Garrity, MSN, RN, CPHQ and Ian Clark are two of latest featured careerists:

 

About Michael W. Garrity, MSN, RN, CPHQ

 

Michael Garrity graduated from a nursing diploma program in 2002, and over the next 14 years, he cared for patients in the emergency department while obtaining both a Bachelors and Master’s degree in nursing education.  Michael left the bedside in 2014 to join the quality team at a health care system as a Senior Quality Analyst and Process Improvement Consultant. 

 

He is currently employed with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island as a Senior Network Quality Analyst where he collaborates with internal and external colleagues to improve healthcare across the state, and he also serves as a per diem administrative nursing supervisor for Charter Care, Our Lady of Fatima Hospital.  Michael is dedicated to the profession of nursing and improving the health of populations.  He is in the final course of Doctorate in Nursing Practice Program, with focus on health systems leadership.  He has embraced the transformational leadership model and the importance of data utilization when assessing improvement needs and evaluating outcomes.  He believes in a supportive culture with inclusion of those who perform the work in decision-making processes. 

 

Michael is a member of the National Association of Healthcare Quality, the American Nurses Association, and the American Organization of Nurse Executives.  He sits on the Rhode Island Nursing Assistant Advisory Board, is a member of the Rhode Island Action Coalition for the future of nursing, and is a NAHQ awards committee member.  Michael is also Certified as a Vizient Analyst, Six Sigma Black Belt, Taproot facilitator, and is a Certified Professional in Health Care Quality (CPHQ). He has also received the designation of Sigma Theta Tau, a chapter of the nursing honor society.

 

About Ian Clark

Ian holds a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from Salve Regina University and went on to earn a Masters of Public Health from the University of CT in 2012.    He currently holds the  position as Analyst for the physician practice enterprise (SCMG) at South County Hospital.  In this role he serves as the primary decision support analyst for the employed medical group.  This includes developing operational analyses & proformas to identify revenue-generating and cost-savings opportunities; he prepares performance dashboards, forecasts physician productivity; and helps identify strategies for improved performance from network physicians.  He also coordinated the budgets for all of the physician practices, ensuring that metrics and targets are being achieved.  Ian manages the physician incentive programs, monitoring various productivity and value-based metrics required from our payors.

 

Prior to his position at SCH, Ian worked for 3.5 years at Lifespan where he was the Operational Excellence Analyst and Process Improvement Consultant.  In this role, he conducted statistical analyses on inpatient re-admissions, mortality, hospital acquired conditions, and outcomes related to various disease states and procedures.  He also facilitated clinical processes of care improvement teams using Six Sigma and Lean methodologies as well as facilitating accreditation readiness drills.

 

Ian’s  certifications include six sigma Greenbelt, Vizient Analyst as well as a TapRoot Facilitator.  In his leisure time, he enjoys fishing form his kayak and doing home improvement projects.
